John,

I was only asking for advice, certainly not dreaming about things to
change. What is your secret, using the right words or putting pressure
on the right people?

Anyways, I think we all owe you one. Btw, I have a couple more of
suppliers I have problems with, I'm pondering sending you a 3 page list
;o}

Big thanks,

Ioan

I sent a letter to the American Galvanisers association see below their
reply, modified wording etc...

They modified the document the reply from the AGA is posted below, here
is
an example of the text in the new document:

======================================================================
A hot-dip galvanized coating contains only trace amounts of cadmium,
hexavalent chromium (if quenched in a chromate solution), but the
coating
could contain up to 0.5% lead (if prime western zinc is used.) This
high
lead level would not comply with the RoHS directive. A galvanizing
kettle
that contains 0.2% lead will be RoHS compliant, while any other kettle
exceeding this lead content will more than likely not be RoHS complaint.
High grade and special high grade baths should contain less than 0.1%
lead,
allowing zinc coatings from these baths to comply with RoHS.

Subject: RE: Technical Question - user of HDG

The AGA has recently become aware of previously unavailable information.
The new information was received from the European General Galvanizers
Association (EGGA). According to the EGGA, the European Commission and
the AGA have different definitions for a homogenous product. According
to the European Commission, a galvanized steel coating is not
homogenous, but instead is categorized as a coating. It is a not
considered part of the steel so any materials must have their weight
percentage calculated based upon coating weight alone.

Due to this new information, the AGA is retracting the previous letter
stating that galvanized coatings are RoHS compliant. The attached
document, Understanding RoHS.Are you RoHS Compliant, is the current
document that can be handed out to customers who ask about RoHS
compliance, revised May 3, 2006.

Hi, I have just been sent a document which is said to have come from
your organization and which says that hot dip galvanized steel should be
considered a homogenous material for the purposes of RoHS calculations.

This is not only not true, it is misleading many people and you could
end up with a liability issue if one of your members produces this data
in defense of a RoHS materials challenge in Europe.

Please get someone to contact me urgently as I believe that the
statement should be re-written, and would be happy to help.

Kind regards,

John Burke
