We use multiple lines that we switch back and forth depending on demand.
A checklist is used by the operators to make sure they catch everything.
Screen printers are thoroughly cleaned inside, and stencils, blades and
holders are dedicated either SnPb or Lead-free. Conveyor rails are
wiped clean. Work benches are wiped clean, and portable green ESD
matting is laid over the existing ESD matting. All solder irons and
other tooling is removed from the bench and replaced with a complete set
from a dedicated Lead-free tool cart. Tool carts are tailored for
different work centers (SMT, wave, ICT, etc.) All tooling used for
Lead-Free is clearly marked as such, and after the line has been
'sanitized', a 'verification team' verifies and signs the checklist
prior to allowing production to begin.
Wave solder requires swapping a solder pot out. We sample the solder
pot metallurgy after each run to ensure the content is within spec. The
makeup solder added during the run holds it pretty constant.

Just as a informal poll, how many people are using a totally separate
SMT line to assemble lead-free boards, vs. using the same line for both
lead bearing and LF products (with proper cleaning). This leads me to my
next question, what are some of the techniques employed to clean the SMT
line before running LF product?
