Upon reviewing the draft, it appears that the lead in CRTs is exempted from
the proposal.  The Annex lists several other exemptions as well.  Does
anybody else feel this is rather unfair?  If I remember my ceramics courses
correctly, Thorium makes a decent radiation shield and could be substituted
for lead in glasses relatively easily, though not inexpensively.

Dave- The draft is not yet law, but according to staff on the DG
Environment, this is the first step to it becoming law. Following adoption
by the EC, WEEE must then be approved by the European Parliament.

It is hard to say how long Parliament will deliberate the adopted WEEE, but
the staff person guesstimated at about two years or so.

As we get more information, it will be made available on this forum and
www.leadfree.org.
