Hi Brian

Actually, they usually don't pass through the server. When someone makes a listserv posting, there are two "FROM" addresses; the poster and the forum. (This is part of the listserv software that lets users control whether they receive their own postings or not.)

So "generally", when you make a post, those @#$%^ automatic msgs are directly from the specific receiver to you; not always, BUT SOMETIMES through the listserv and out to everybody. We're working to keep them filtered from dist to the whole lists.

And yes, I hate them too. Somebody internal here to IPC posted an all-inhouse msg on how to make that rule work, and now if somebody leaves an hour early they feel compelled to turn on the function. We even got in a loop where three people turned on the rule at about the same time, then sent "all-hands" msgs to let people know they were going to be out of office. Within a few minutes all three mail boxes had over 8,000 autoreply msgs that overloaded and shut down our post office. Stupid people. jack

Hi!

I'm getting a little narked at the number of automatic "out of office"
messages, in response to anything I contribute to the IPC forums. I
cannot see that these serve any useful purpose other than to help
overload the servers/internet etc. In fact, they are little better than
spam or any other form of canned luncheon meat.

Is there any way they can be filtered out at the IPC server?

Just a thought...

Brian
