Phil,

I hope you plan on changing part numbers? We are changing all our end
product part numbers rather than trying to track RoHS compliance by S/N.

It's a pain, but in the long run it is the best way, (in my opinion).

LF and RoHS compliant are two different aminals. LF has been around for
years, RoHS is new and there are possible legal implications.

OK, but what if I want to be a good doobie and make sure if I have
tin/lead returns or lead-free returns that I can quickly identify their
build origin for the proper rework process. We do not serialize our
circuit boards so I can't use that data as an identifier.

You should not worry too much about meeting any IPC-1066 marking
requirements. They are only guidelines for users to help identify LF and
do not address the 29 substances WEEE/ RoHS is concerned with, only Pb
and PCB finishes.

Use of those labels is only optional, and will not satisfy the EU or any
legal requirements.

OK, but unless I scrap my bare board inventory so I can use a new silk
screen with the markings as outlined by IPC-1066 I will have some boards
that have migrated to completely lead-free. We are working on changing
our board plating, component lead plating and solder, but this won't be
a case of tin/lead on Friday and Lead-Free on Monday. There will be
some transition period were it will come together for everything except
the silk screen. I've seen Kapton labels by Brady and others, but so
far I haven't seen anything that won't desolve in oil. Maybe an epoxy
ink stamp would work for thouse boards.

Until a product is fully converted is there any point in marking it as
being
in transition? It either is or it isn't leadfree. It is sort of like
(not
that this applies to that many on this forum...) being almost pregnant.
You
either are or you aren't...

The IPC-1066 standard is very clear for marking something that has gone
through the full conversion cycle of lead-free, but for those boards
that are not yet fully converted, what marking schemes have been used?
We have the added wrinkle that some of our boards are submerged in a
dielectric oil and conventional label adhesives tend to desolve in this
oil.
