You are quite right, of course, but those were in the days of relatively
low-volume 286s and earlier. I don't imagine that the number of kgs of
Cd, world wide, from PCs that have not already been landfilled is going
to make any significant difference compared with the quantities from
other, much larger, NiCd batteries, such as were common for mobile
telephones and many other applications, up to a few years ago. Or the
quantities of steelwork that were Cd-plated to prevent rust. Or the
quantities used inmaking white-metal bearings for petrol and diesel
engines. Or the quantities used in moderator rods in nuclear reactors.

Actually, there is cadmium in nearly all TV and computer set-ups, which
I forgot about. In cathode-ray tube phosphors. The green and blue
phosphors have their colours adjusted by precise doping with cadmium
sulfide. Similarly, white monochrome phosphors used in both CRTs and
fluorescent lamps contain cadmium. So, even backlit LCD displays may
contain cadmium! However, this does not appear to faze the environmental
activists. Notwithstanding, recovery of the toxic phosphors would be
easy, for recycling.
