Lead-Free Solder
PURPOSE:
This Airworthiness Advisory provides information on the trend within the
electronics manufacturing community toward the use of lead (Pb)-free solder.
To date, no lead-free solders are known to have met the reliability
requirements imposed upon military electronics. At the same time, many
electronic items being acquired by the United States Air Force (USAF) and
Department of Defense (DoD) may already contain lead-free solder due to
electronics manufacturers' use of solely lead-free solder

Why hasn't NASA or the Airforce ever complained about this?

Seems to me they have specified use of the Sn96 and Sn96.5 alloy on many
programs for many years??

... and don't forget the silver phase change problems and poorer
mechanical fatigue resistance as compared to Sn/Ag/Cu.

Stopping for a minute on this fun discussion/learning experience.

If you decide to use 96.5Sn you do know that your soldering temperature
will be higher and you might have component MSL problems. I know it is
only a few degrees yet you don't have lots of margin on some of your
products.
