Dan,
Right now we are still lumped in with desk tops and servers. There is a rumor that Germany might break it up further so we would indeed be in with cell phones. Time will tell.

Hi Bev,
The bright side for your products is that they are small and light weight. The reporting requirements seem to be by weight which makes sense from a recycling point of view. It is possible, but I find it hard to believe they will get down to the level of PDAs and Laptops as separate categories. It will be interesting to see how the groupings come out, but I bet there were many less kilos of raspberries sold than TVs or freezers. Of course if you get grouped with Cell Phones, you might be the heavy weight.

Dan

Denis,
I may be wrong, but it is my understanding that you and your company will not have to do any historical data mining. This is good and bad news. Good in that you will not have to waste time doing it, but bad in that you have no control over how much you are going to get hit for. The EU boys will determine how big a "problem" is your particular sector of the industry, tie that in with your CURRENT market share and send you a bill. Your previous market share might have been zero, if your company is "young" (in the sense of selling in the EU) like ours, but you will have to pay for the past sins of others.

Bev Christian

Ink stamp would be best solution due to oil.

We are in process for RoHS Compliancy and WEEE Compliancy. I do have a
question regarding WEEE requirement, anyone know how far back one has to
research shipments to member states of EU for the pre August, 2005
registration/existing product disposal financing? I can find reference as to
how many years after directive effective date one can provide takeback costs
to customer.

Not yet. I'm trying to look forward to the point of having compliant
parts, solder and "old" boards that have been plated with immersion tin,
but not marked as lead-free in the silk screen.

OK, but unless I scrap my bare board inventory so I can use a
new silk
screen with the markings as outlined by IPC-1066 I will have
some boards
that have migrated to completely lead-free. We are working on
changing
our board plating, component lead plating and solder, but this
won't be
a case of tin/lead on Friday and Lead-Free on Monday. There
will be
some transition period were it will come together for everything
except
the silk screen. I've seen Kapton labels by Brady and others,
but so
far I haven't seen anything that won't desolve in oil. Maybe an
epoxy
ink stamp would work for thouse boards.

Until a product is fully converted is there any point in marking
it as
        being
in transition? It either is or it isn't leadfree. It is sort
of like
        (not
that this applies to that many on this forum...) being almost
pregnant.
        You
        either are or you aren't...

The IPC-1066 standard is very clear for marking something that
has gone
through the full conversion cycle of lead-free, but for those
boards
that are not yet fully converted, what marking schemes have been
used?
We have the added wrinkle that some of our boards are submerged
in a
dielectric oil and conventional label adhesives tend to desolve
in this
        oil.
