Subject: RE: [LF] Interpretation regarding high lead solders and RoHS

Bev,

As the law is written (solder >85% Pb), I would argue that 100% Pb should be
exempt. Unless they were to instate a maximum Pb level (such as greater
than 85% and less than 98%), 100% Pb is greater than 85% and therefore
should be exempted. If someone were to argue against this, I would ask:

1. Is 95Pb/5Sn exempted? I think everyone would say yes.
2. 98Pb/2Sn?
3. 99Pb/1Sn?
4. 99.9Pb/0.1Sn?
5. 99.99Pb/0.01Sn?
At what level does it become not exempt?

The only thing that I see being a potential issue is that the term "solder"
is often defined as an ALLOY used to bond two metal surfaces. Since 100% Pb
is not an alloy, I see this as a potential sticking point. However, I am
sure that your 100% Pb has some impurities in it, so you are really
soldering with an alloy of 99.8Pb/0.05Sn/0.05Sb/0.1Bi (or whatever the
composition really is).

Best Regards,

Tim Jensen

Thanks, Dave, other than a question from someone else, you are the only
other one to respond. However, my original question still stands: can
100% lead be considered a high lead solder to claim the exemption?
Obviously if it is not being used as a solder, I can see the answer
being no, but in the case I have stated...

Bev, I have no idea what you are working on.
Those guys/gals at RIM are tricky people.

YET soldering isn't a key word to any EU Directive.
The application, or product, and customer is important.

If it falls under an EU directive, Lead (Pb) is a restricted material
with
as you noted certain exemptions and yahdah, yahdah.

Yours in Engineering, Dave
