Dear all,

I promised to post a contribution on the ECO-impact of metals used in solder alloys and solderable finishes, such as Sn, Pb, Ag, Bi, Cu, Sb, Ni, Pd, Pt, Au. All these metals and probably some more are applied in soldering of electronics and it is that
list of metals which will have to provide the lead-free alternatives. I do this by sending an attachment, of which I hope that it is small enough to be distributed by the IPC server.
Recently, there has been an strong debate on theECO-impact of Ni, triggered by a remark in one of my postings. That metal is addresses in particlar in this contribution. By the way, I had to rely on the environmental scientists in our organisation,
because I personally am not a specialist in these matters. It has been said in a posting, this is a very young field in science so, we still lack too many data. Anyway, I hope that this posting will be helpful for a better understanding.

For completeness, I want to refer to my earlier posting of December 1st, 1999. It is available in the mail archives of IPC. The webmaster wrote: "Yes. All of the Leadfree and other forum postings are archived at the IPC site www.ipc.org >On-Line
Resources & Databases > E-mail Archives. Searching can be done by subject, key word, poster, and date."

With best regards,
Erik
