I don't think the EU are being NIMBY - look at the new (world's largest)

metal shredder in Newport (UK), capable of handling 350 or more cars an

hour:

BTW - I think the shredder classifies as fixed industrial equipment :)

Chris

Right on the lead-free nuts, Joe.

In a message dated 10/4/2006 5:34:01 AM Pacific Daylight Time,

backyard "recyclers" in China and India.

Thank you Oliver.

I was aware (I think many of us are) of the outlaw operations.

By your putting the word recyclers in quotes you indicate that you

understand that these folks are operating illegitimately. I was speaking

of regulated and well run operations, not pirate operations..

There are those who will surely make the argument that those doing the

work are doing so to put food on the table and given the choice between

starvation and potential illness they should be allowed to choose the

latter. The lesser of evils proposition. To be sure, it is a thorny

issue with lot of ethical and philosophical over and under tones.

That aside, if there is a true and heartfelt concern about this within

the EU, why not ban shipment of waste product from the EU to

illegitimate operations so as to clear their consciences and do the

recycling at home? Perhaps the EU subject to NIMBY (not in my back

yard).

In the end analysis, it seems to me that, no matter how lead-free gets

spun, it still comes out looking like a bad idea on the whole relative

to the environment.

Thanks again,

Joe
