Well folks, i left this note in my draft draw' for a couple of days,
just in case I'd see it less red after sleeping on it .
See it same now, something is not quite square ,
so; Edwin especially : take it with a pinch of salt, still, from the few
responses i got so far on this report/decision motto, a lot of us have a
mixed feel on this :

Yep, distressed myself.
Checked the :
http://www.nemi.org ; got distressed even more ;
rather true "national" line : "have to be" NA Co. (50%) to qualify for
membership .
Not that it would bar us http://www.resmed.com into the cold world of
helpless isolation , http://www.raytheon.com not listed either (to my
pleasant surprise);
Kirk, it looks like forking out the $25K (our)- $75K (your case I think) fee
;
not annually I'd hope(?). Feel sad for the masses grazing on cakes , "huh"
's the expression indeed .
The twist ?
Interestingly enough , IPC being a NEMI member (and holding the proverbial
umbrella over it's members) does therefore have the report, and does not
disclose it (to members) ?
Double standards, white lies, selective clubs, ipc$com ?
We don't mind to pay for the report (of non national security
classification) of common = all of us = interest;
but a $10K min. shot ???
I wonder what would happen if we'd discovered penicillin in 1999 ; we'd die
by the patent laws for sure .

So, Chris, what do we do here ? is this [LF]a designated "play with
yourself" area for little boys,
while in Edwin's mind the subject (choice) is "made" in big boys corral ?
And/or thus, wouldn't it be jolly ethical (and wise) to pass such a
monumental (and fundamental) conclusion (report) onto mere mortals (those
being pillars [lets face it] of commerce)?
Is there something (oh, what a feeling; again) to hide ; or would it wiser
IF we'd all pull one way ?
Even on big brother's say so.
This subject being unpleasant as is , it's getting stickier still ('d wish
smd polymers were like this)
Usually the larger organizations do recognize responsibility's of leadership
before getting into Microsoft likes predicaments ;
I can even see "little" coms like Raytheon to happily follow as long they
SEE the SENSE in it .
What's the point of keeping the carrot under lock and key ; instead of
spreading the gospel amongst us bunnies ?
Very momentarily advantage of research ?
Very myopic "decision" i'd say (in this case)

Or (hope not), do we face some mexican stand-off (again, PAL, SECAM..ever
learn?)in LF arena (Nippon & Euro obviously [despite driving it; for
whatever reason] not in NEMI ranks)in alloy trends ?

Edwin, when you say "made" ; regionally, globally, selectively (seems) ?

Sorry to be disenchanted, any lights on ?

Gordon ?

Thanks ahead

     Uh-huh. Well if you can't give us a copy of the report, I suspect
we'll
just end up duplicating the study effort. Hopefully we'll agree on the new
alloy(s) chosen.

Paul/Kirk,
It was a result of a thorough review of industry data from both the U.S. and
Europe that
our alloy committee compiled and analyzed followed by approval of our member
OEM and EMS companies. While much of the data is readily available, some of
the data was provided by member companies. The overall data base is only
available to NEMI member companies. If you are
interested in membership, see the NEMI web site for more information
(www.nemi.org) or call Ron Gedney at 703-834-2084.

My main point is that there is a very short list of similar alloys out there
that the component suppliers should be working on based on the voice of many
of their customers. To suggest the component suppliers should wait until
April 2000 is a poor recommendation for those want to be proactive in the
Pb-free arena.

Regards,
Edwin

Curious as well Edwin,
With NiAu board and 3.9Ag in alloy (and component metalisation) I wonder how
the IMT's will stand in cycling.
>From what I've seen before it would be too strong not to be brittle,
with large (1206) ceramics on FR-4 CTE ?
Hope you'd tell me (quantifiably)'m mistaken .
Something is validated somewhere, the (why?)step from 3.9 reflow to 3.5 wave
is intriguing

thanks ahead

     Can I have a copy of the report describing the reasons why those alloys
were chosen?

Thanks,

In my mind the choices have been made. The NEMI Pb-free Project has chosen
to move forward with Sn-3.9Ag-0.6Cu for our evaluations of reflow
appliations and Sn-0.7Cu
and Sn-3.5Ag for wave applications. European activities have also
identified
the Sn-Ag-Cu family as the recommended Pb-free alloy family. Thus the
component finishes must work with those similar alloys. There is no need to
wait until April 2000, the OEMs and EMSs have already made the choice and
the solder suppliers can supply these alloys.

Edwin Bradley
Chair of the NEMI Pb free project
