There is general agreement that for hardware, the safest bet in being
RoHS compliant is to stick with "stainless steel." I'd like to hear
what various companies are doing to appease their marketing groups when
it comes to aesthetics and the use of "black" screws. Is there a
reasonable solution? Oxidizing of stainless seems to give different
results from different suppliers. Our history has shown that this
process leads to corrosion. Thoughts? Alternatives?

For RoHS we are ordering only Stainless Steel. Many zinc coatings are
not compliant, and it isn't worth the effort of trying to spec and track
that metal process for fractions of a cent, at this point.
Maybe when zinc RoHS options are more common, we'll go back, but my
impression is many of the hardware sources we use are "RoHS?? what's
that? It's going to cost you..."

Our spec to our hardware vendor is either Zinc plating or stainless
steel. Buying cadmium plated screws has been not allowed for at least
the last 10 years at our facility.

Lots of inexpensive hardware and metal parts (like those used in
consumer
products) is cad plated, which doesn't sound homogeneous....

Do any metal formulations commonly used in hardware contain cadmium?

Can you give a concrete example of a stainless steel that is not
inherently free of "RoHS elements" to the specified limits? Doubtless
you are thinking of hexavalent chromium. But alloyed metals cannot be
said to have any valence; this exists only in compounds. They are also
"homogeneous" (according to the definition), to boot.
