Hi DTI-Nick, IPC LF Listservers,

<As any customer board built after July 2006 would need to be compliant if
falling under the scope of RoHS and not exempted, I assume your first point
concerns categories outside the directive or exempted applications.>

NO that isn't what I am asking. BTW, I think I am asking the same first
question Alstom posed. So you are still working for the British tax payers.

Say I have a current product built and shipped in 1999 or 1989 and a
portion of it (a board assembly or even a unit assembly) comes back to the
shop for repair. The repair is done with TinLead 63/37 or 60/40 and sent on
back to the customer for another 10-20 years of life.

<If so, repair using SnPb is currently Ok.

Will the regulations grandfather, grandmama legacy products, that keep on
ticking and ticking.

<No-one can predict that 'ANY and all regulations written up via DTI would
approve me' for all the future!>

I agree

<Not sure what you mean by Alstom's second question as can't see one there,
nor use of 'transition' board.>

Alstom gave a second scenario of a partially converted electronic assembly,
which I am calling an in "transition" board. The best I can figure is that
this is slide number 11. My electronic assembly imagination tells me that
some of these components are soldered with TL and some with LF. I think
they are asking if this board comes back is it still OK to solder with
TinLead.

I thought Alstom's question 3 was a bit funny, yet quite practical. So what
will the regulations say about someone who repaired a LF board with TL.
(Nick you don't have to answer this one)

Yours in Engineering, Dave

P.S. Thanks Nick
