Mike,

Thanks for digging up the info on the production and use of PBB's and
penta- and octa-BDE. Now if someone can get a dollar figure for the
amount of the latter two undesirable BFR's that were produced in 2002,
we'll know how much of these substances were used in electronics that
year and hence be able to put an upper bound on the benefit of RoHS.

Yes, billions of dollars have been squandered by an industry that could
not, and still can't, figure out how to prevent imposition of crippling
and needless legislation by legislators influenced by irresponsible
activists who agitate for "corporate social responsibility." The
captains of our industry are obviously very bright to have brought us
the electronics revolution. But despite all their resources (in-house
EHS experts, lobbyists, industry associations, public relations experts)
apparently not bright enough to counter the activists effectively.

Lacking courage they may simply shrug and dismiss money spent on
compliance with RoHS and WEEE as a part of the cost of doing business,
not recognizing that each capitulation emboldens the activists to use
ever-increasing deception to attempt ever more draconian measures - all
in the name of public benefit. How will this "global trend" be halted
and reversed? Will the activists ever be exposed as frauds? Are there
enough people who in our enlightened and sophisticated culture still
believe that truth exists and that there are serious consequences for
compromising it? If not, then maybe if as a result of the activists'
parasitic activity the economy takes a big enough hit, there will be a
drop in contributions to their organizations. But maybe someone else can
offer a less gloomy outlook.
