Let there be light! The convergence of photonics and electronics called opto-electronics will soon usher in products with extraordinary functionality. In other words, we haven't really seen HDI yet!

The Conference Proceedings from IPC's recent two-day International Conference on Opto-Electronics: Let There Be Light! (held May 3-4 in Toronto, Canada) are now available for $50 to IPC members and $100 to non-members. To order, contact IPC's order entry department at 847-790-5362.

Conference presentations focused on the impact of photonics on printed wiring board and electronics assembly technology, including:

-Key manufacturing and packaging requirements needed for cost reduction.
-Infrastructure and equipment changes faced by the manufacturer.
-Why standards are needed and what areas of the technology can be effectively standardized.
-What are MEMS/MOEMS and what are their present and future applications?
- Printed circuit board parameters, such as line density, via size and surface finish, needed for opto-electronic assembly.
- Board fabrication registration and its impact upon embedded photonics.
- Fiber optic manufacturing: how it is done and where it intersects with electron-based technology.
- Critical considerations in opto-electronics assembly, such as optical connector cleanliness, fiber alignment.
- Automation for cost control and higher volume manufacturing.

Proceedings are also available by email to [log in to unmask] with credit card information or purchase order (IPC members only).
