Hello Brian and Pratap. 
 
I suppose the up side is that cultural icons have demonstrated  the ability 
to influence their peers behavior and I suspect that this is  the reasoning for 
using them. 
 
One would think that the message would be more important than the messenger  
but today they often appear to have equal weight and maybe even a bit tilted  
towards the messenger. 
 
Unfortunately, many of the messages of these celebrated folks  are not so 
good, (Paris Hilton being the poster girl for what not to do  with one's iconic 
status).
