I looked at the Prius but it was loaded with electronics that I found  little 
use for so I purchased a 5 speed manual Corrola and manual  everything else 
possible including hand roll up windows and door locks. I get 42  - 44 MPG  
(~5.5 liters per 100km) and average 36 MPG on a routine basis for  combined 
driving. (If I factor in my bike riding the average MPG gets even  better... ;-) 
 
70000 miles so far with no mechanical (or electronic  :-) problems.
