Other than the ZBC version of embedded circuits (bought mainly by Cisco
and Sun Microsystems), the largest applications of embedded component PCBs
can be found in Japan. In 2007, the total production was approximately
$20 million (excluding ZBC circuits) in Japan, mostly for small modules
circuits, such as for wrist watches (Casio uses a lot) and cell phone TV
receiver modules. 80% of the components used in Japan are of chip type.
For some reason, screened components such as resistors are not preferred,
probably because of the trimming the is necessary to get intended values
to be within 5%.
S. Korea is following Japan, and Taiwan will catch up soon.
