Brad, you're just the sort of passionate and experienced guy we're looking
for. Geography isn't all that important when it comes to helping out.

We also meet on the West Coast usually at Anaheim for Expo/Apex/Designers
Summit.

Subject: Re: [DC] Designers Council needing help

I have been lighting this fire at my company for years.
I started at of college in the production department running
SMT and ATE test equipment. I grew found of finding issues
with the PC boards and pointing them out. After a couple
years I grew tired and didn't find ability to grow. I left
to another local company and some how got thrown into the
PCB design arena.

This company hand drew (only 5 years ago) schematics and
did point to point routing in some old system. I brought
in Protel and self taught through IPC documents and other
sources how to Design.
I changed the company and made the Engineering and assembly
side better and more efficient. But was a small company
and worked and slept there. I had new baby and family was
missing me.

My old company placed ad for entry PCB designer I applied and
came back to where I am now. From day one I have lit fires
in this place in regards to Electrical/PCB design changes.
We had Senior level people but no one had the enthusiasm I had.

I have brought in many instructors (Lee Hill, Doug Brooks, Mary
Sugden, Protel training, etc.) Implemented/modified many processes
and procedures. Implemented 3D pcb check and creation. Required
use of IPC standards and certification. I have attended many
classes and Shows to which have helped make me a better designer.
I have been designing for only 6 years but my experience and designs
reflect for a designer of at least twice that

Due to this we designers and PCB Librarians are slowly moving
away from being the low man on the totem pole. We are invited to
Product launch meetings, recognized for our part in the Product
creation and all the many other things we deserve. We have even
helped create new positions to help Engineers and designers be more
successful such as Component Engineer (Part creator per IPC Standard)

I would love to attend this PCB meeting but I am in Fresno, California
and we usually get to attend only 1 or 2 training/shows a year. So I
found the IPC show in L.A. February a great show and the PCB design
west Show in March as well. This year I hope to attempt the "Top Gun"
contest
at PCB west.

I have also found we need to recruit the younger crowd to PCB design. I am
31 and most design people I see are usually older. This may also being a
reason it isn't hanging on and the jobs are being done elsewhere.

Andy please keep up the work on the other certifications.

Thanks,

Brad Jaurique C.I.D.

Subject: [DC] Designers Council needing help

Just wanted to broadcast a message to as many committed board designers as I
can.

The Designers Council is facing something of a crisis, in the sense that
there is so much to do and only so many committed bodies to do it. There's
just a few passionate members on the Executive Board trying to keep the ball
rolling, and the Education Committee is in some disarray through lack of
enthusiasm for carrying some of our new training programs to a successful
conclusion. We're all volunteers, with real jobs and families, and it's hard
to maintain enthusiasm when resources are limited and progress is slow, and
without the support of a larger volunteer work force.

So three things:

1) Stoke up the fire in the belly, get passionate about your own
career and the careers of any designer you know, and get involved. Many
hands make light work, so get into a high level network, contribute your own
knowledge, learn from others, and generally enjoy the company of like minded
souls doing good deeds.
2) Get yourself to PCB East in Manchester, New Hampshire this year if
you can. It's an excellent program. The IPC will have a Standards booth
there - it's a great opportunity to meet some of the IPC folk, and to spend
your standards voucher in a good cause.
3) Get yourself also to the Executive Board Governance meeting on
Sunday, October 9th at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester, NH. That's the day
before PCB East starts with tutorials and workshops. You'll meet the team,
you'll see how it operates, you'll have a chance to enter discussions, and
you'll see how we handle the many problems we're facing. A good showing will
energise us all, and give you the opportunity of a lifetime. Everyone is
welcome.

See you there, yes?
