Hi Steve,
You might not want to hear this, but, besides function, the design shall also ensure long term reliability. And since the long term reliability goes all the way until the end of the life cycle of the product, the designer should be liable a long time after the design is completed and successfully tested for functionality.
I suggest IPC-D-279 as a good reading.

Hello:
Just want to get an opinion on a certain matter. Where does a designers responsibility end? After successful assembly, after successful functional tests by EE's? System test? By responsibility, I mean tracking wise. Should we be chasing after EE's to make sure everything tested out okay, while were busy designing another board? How far do we chase? How far do they (MGMT) expect YOU to chase?
