I've been using Altium since it was Protel 98... a little while ago... :)
We have the latest version of Altium 14.2 here...and version 13 at Palomar college...
This is how we rename the first 16 Mechanical Layers... we only need to use these(and there are plenty more there to do special custom things with... )

Altium gives you 32 mechanical layers to use now.. :)
I build the parts in the library along with the assembly layer data and ref des centered on the part, courtyards, 3D models and keep-outs, etc...
That way the assembly drawing is a snap...
