No, it isn't a good practice, but how many times has a designer/detailer/engineer had to put 3 details and 14 notes on an assembly drawing to show how they want the connector to be assembled?  Document what you design, and keep notes on what took place; maybe someone will see the need to change company/individual practice.  Extensive docs are not the best solution, but sometimes that's all we can do until the climate changes and the wind blows another direction.

About 2-3 years ago, or maybe more, Framitome (who bought out Berg) renumbered their Minitek(tm) 2mm line of connectors to match standard 2-row IDC pinout.  THAT was fun!?!  Had to add notes/details to all the affected drawings.  And the mating housings we had in stock had the wrong pin 1 indicator for a time.  Our documentation was detailed enough to avert potential problems.

        I don't think it is a question about who can change the pin outs of a connector when they see fit. The question is if it is a good practice to do so. As a PCB designer it is the designers responsibility to design a board that exactly represents what is to be built and assembled. If I send a design out that has the silkscreen mirrored and they put the connector in wrong who's fault is it? They built the design as I told them too, or as the data states. What is correct the pin out or the silkscreen?
I know the assembly house should call when a red flag is tripped but how many do, and who is to say they are going to get the same engineer or designer who knows what is going on with this design?
