I too, use a separate layer (I.E. not the Silkscreen layer) for the 
Assembly Drawing information, as does William.

What I do is to also use that layer - the Assembly Layer - to depict 
the actual outline of the part, and make it the exact size as called out 
in the datasheet.

This way, I have a way to see how much real estate the actual part is 
going to consume on the board, which will be different from the 
silkscreen representation.

Just my .02 worth.
