Mike,

I've used .025 trace widths with 1206 and 0805's (for power/ground, etc)
without any problems. As long as you use solder mask over bare copper, there
shouldn't be any assembly solder joint issues to worry about. Currently I
have no experience with 0603 packages. As for a rule of thumb, the only one I
heard several years ago was that the trace should not be larger than 50% of
the pad width, but I can't swear that it's a valid assumption in the SMT
world today.
