Actually, I think that it is about time for discussion or two on MFD, or
Manufacturing for Design.

Yes, 98% of the time you do need to follow good DFM Practices, and there are many a
designer who would do well in learning a little more in the area of DFM . .. .

But . . .

There are times, and it is becomming more and more common with RF and High Speed
Designs, where you just have to take your standard DFM Rules and shove 'em, and tell
the Manufacturing Engineer to go pound sand and manufacture it per print whether he
likes it or not.

While I do not have the time to get into a battle of wits (or lack thereof) on this
point right here at this point in time, the simple fact of the matter is that
sometimes there can be a little too much DFM on certain types of designs, and the
actual product suffers in the end.

A good Designer knows when and where to apply what manufacturing criteria to what
design without making the design suffer as a result.

Just as there are many Designers in need of a little more DFM training, there are
far too many Manufacturing Engineers out there that think that they know it all,
when in actuality they know precious far too little when it comes to Electronic
Engineering and Packaging Technology, especially in the area of RF and High Speed
Design, and they need to realize that sometimes what they try and enforce on a
design can sometimes actually hurt the design, and they need to be willing to
understand that and learn a few new things themselves.

Stirring the pot as usual,

JaMi
