Monetarily, for the most part no. At least not that I'm aware of.

But for the understanding that this is career and field that I work in, yes. When people ask me what it means and I explain it, it seems to give them a deeper understanding that I'm not someone who "connects the dots" and that I take this seriously.

Plus most places are willing to pay for their employees to do continuing education, and this is great in that aspect and I've learned a tremendous amount. For me, coming from an electrical background, it really helped to fill in the mechanical aspects of the pwb design world.

Best Regards,

-Jeffrey

I will chime in with an 'I agree' as for the need for one to take the
workshop to hrlp study for the exam.

I got my CID back in 1998. One question that I have is... does having a
certification really help PCB designers in their careers?

Most people that I tell (managers, bosses, etc.) are clueless about PCB
design and such matters. They could care less that there is a
'certification' - or anything to do with that.

It certainly hasn't helped me - other than for bragging rights at PCB
Designer Council meetings.

It's not like you've got a four-year college degree.

So... has it really helped others? I mean monetarily - like you get mopre
salary because you have it - versus not having it.

Regards,

James Jackson - CID # 10220

The CID is intended to test you for your PCB design knowledge assuming your
knowledge will be equivalent to a average PCB designer with about 2 years of
experience in the industry.

The test is 104 multiple choice questions and the objective is to pick the
'most' correct answer from the listed choices. It is a timed test, you will
have 2 hours to take it. You need to get 73 percent of the answers correct
to pass the test. That means you need to have 76 out of the 104 questions
correct to pass the test.

Statistically, those with English as their first language seem to do better
on the test than those who have English as a second language.

Diligent personal study of the materials in the guidebook is highly
recommended.

The 3 day workshop has proven to be very valuable to the designers that take
the test... It gives the candidates an opportunity to get questions answered
and a good 2 day review of the materials that they need to know as
designers.

Most of the people that have come just to the test day only and have not
taken the time to study and or attend the workshop... tend to experience
failure to pass the test on the first try. Many of them go back home and
study hard and come back to retest and pass it on the second try...

Don't think it is a piece of cake. It is a valid test and has been taken by
many designers... it serves to be a testament to their knowledge and
dedication to the printed circuit design field and they deserve the
recognition that goes with that accomplishment...

I recommend you get your materials a month in advance and if you can get a
group of designers in your area or local chapter together to study
together... it will help you a lot.
