There is an IPC calculator that provides a recommended component courtyard, i.e buffer around the part.  It lets you select from dense population, medium, or widely-spaced.  That selection will determine the pad size and courtyard size.  It used to be free, but I think you have to pay now to get the utility with reasonable functionality enabled.  

Usually the assembly house will tell you their dream value (large courtyard) for ease of rework, and it's a judgment call how small you can go.  It's odd that the CM wouldn't even give you their dream courtyard size.

Subject: [DC] clearance between SMD devices

I've tired to find out how much clearance is required between SMD parts such as 0603, 0805, and 
SOT23 parts.  For example, if I have 2 0603 resistors side by side, what's the minimum distance 
between the resistors?  Are there rules of thumb or IPC rules?  How accurately can SMD parts be 
placed by machine?  I've asked an assembly house, but didn't get an answer.  I'm looking for typical 
values.
