I have not needed them for several years now, if you check with your
fabricator, they will probably tell you
that all you need to send is the Gerber data.

I simply create the Gerber's (needed to make photoplots anyway) and then go
a step further, I read the Gerber data
into GC-Prevue (freeware viewer at Graphicode.com) and then check that they
are correct, do any necessary
alterations that I want (remove some mounting hole lands etc) and then save
it in graphicodes format as a .GWK file.

Then I send this off to the manufacturers. They then do the step & repeat
bits to my specifications and send back to me
the step & repeat file for me to check & confirm suitability before they do
their own manufacturing plots.
(Obviously this only works if the manufacturer uses the GC-Cam front end
system, and mine all do).

The PCB manufacturers all prefer this, and it allows me to catch an awful
lot of errors etc.
Its also a lot quicker than checking plots as the files are all sent via
email.

Just a suggestion form a Brit.
