Having been at this for a long time we have all seen many parts of the design process break and cause us to revise, rip-up and re-route our current designs. Be it the lack of information from the EE, the Component Engineer, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, the Customer specifications etc., The sheer break-down of communication as to the changes from one or all of these different factors will and has caused delays/changes and most of all frustration at all levels. One the most important issues that I see is the lack of understanding that each of these areas has with the cause and effect on each other. Communication with each one has a better chance of resolving the problems faster when all are looking at it. Will/does this happen we can only hope that as PCB Designers we are the referee between all these teams and we can throw the flag when one of them are trying an illegal move.

Subject: Re: [DC] Conversation topic: Getting your designs done right!

All of the above...

And "lack of a spec".

When the EE gets given a rough "idea" of what sales want, then designs for it.
A rough fag packet schematic then gets passed to me, I then make a CAD schematic, then
after a review (which is never done completely - as Karl mentioned) I start the PCB.

During this, the non existent spec keeps damn changing, so I rip up & start again so many times.

Then when we are finished and it fits perfectly the verbal spec that the EE was given, we get told.
"oh no, I didn't mean like that - I want this" and we start again!

Grrrrr.....!!!!

Such is life, keeps me employed I suppose. (especially when it makes projects last years instead of a few month)

Matthew.
