Randy,
      it is definitely not over kill. With ever shrinking geometries of
components
you need smaller vias. For micro BGA's you will need via in the pad -
blind via that is, and that's where the 6 mil vias come to use. We are
not using micro BGA's yet, but
in couple of years probably will.
