Good comments James.. :)

We are using Altium's Database library feature which allows you to use a database program (ERP/MRP) or ODB compliant database or even a spreadsheet style database, like MSACCESS to drive the library... There are an unlimited amount of parameters you can add to a part that gets placed in the schematic... We store the RoHS compliant status of the part in there... though the ideal situation would be to access the SQL database that MRP uses to keep track of valid parts avoiding obsolete parts, or end of life parts for new designs...

Most of us have a MRP type system that purchasing used to buy parts that have been released into the system and are properly documented to give an approved vendor list from which they can buy from... I think the common compliment of data needs to be shared amongst the users in an interactive way, so that it gets entered once... then used over and over thru multiple applications...

Driving the whole assembly job from the schematic doesn't make much sense... the schematic by definition is really a tool to describe the functional and theoretical electronic description of the circuit with ALL its options and how it interconnects on a single board... not how it mounts, how it gets heat out, how it is protected from vibration, what happens to its signals off the board, etc... there are many aspects to design that the existing tools do not pull together or share readily...

Really there should be an 'Assembly Configuration' tool that pulls the data all together from the different aspects of the assemblies and makes it easy to manage and drive BOMs and control revision status from... (imho)
