Someone just created a 3D image from carbon fiber materials...
UV curable epoxies and polymers have been in use in the 3D printing industry for quite some time...
Sintering of metal powders is currently used to make metal items with 3D printers...
Even ceramic clay has been printed with 3D printed technology...
I think, a multi-material 3D printing machine could build multilayer boards without any drilling operations... 1 mil thick at a time... it would take awhile to make one and it would probably not be cost effective... but I think it is do-able... some of the 3D printers boast .0005 inch (1/2 mil) accuracy...
It would quite probably be faster than the print and etch methods we use nowadays.... and wouldn't be an EPA hazard...
If someone made silver/copper paste like they make solder paste, I'll bet it could be fused with CO2 laser... the bonding of the barrels of the holes could be customized for very good strength characteristics... spraying of soldermask polymer, laying down of fiber in a weave reinforcement pattern.
I seriously think it could be done... at least I can visualize how it might be done...
Might be a potential product there for someone... maybe... if they have the funding to develop it...
Maybe there will be one in the next 10 years... who knows...
