In general, I'd say there isn't enough information to answer the question
below (or the most correct answer is not listed). The listed answer would
make sense if you specified 'card edge connector' or 'edge fingers', but by
specifying "the connector" it clouds the issue. Perhaps the connector is
the most accessible spot. For example take the common PC configuration.
Connectors (parallel port, serial port, power, etc) are accessible from
outside the case. The edge opposite "the connector" is not often accessible
- rather it is buried deep within the case. I'd rather have the field
adjustable components accessible with the least amount of trouble (but maybe
I'm unique).
I'm happy to see this question was not included.
