Last I knew (I did it in 2000) There was no cost for competing and you got
in to the conference for free. I had to submit an essay as to why I thought
I should be a Top Gun. You probably need to provide a box to run your
software on, check with your vendor, they might provide hardware and
software for you to use.

You receive a data "package" before the competition so you can create your
library parts before hand, you also get a dummy netlist so you can see what
to expect and do any conversion automation you might want to do.

The contest ran Sunday thru Tuesday in 2000 (IIRC). They give us an outline
drawing and schematic/netlist, they threw a couple of undefined parts in to
simulate common customer behavior. Our board was about the size of a PCI
half-card. You have 3 days (8-10 hours each) to produce the gerbers. They
throw in an ECO part way through, again to simulate the typical customer.
When the contest is complete they import the gerbers into Valor and evaluate
it, You get points based on various criteria (such as layer count, routing,
placement, power distribution, and esthetics.)

You also have to take a knowledge test, and be interviewed by a panel of
former Top Guns.

In total, the design was fairly simple, but it would not have been easy to
do without an autorouter in the time given (we had one guy who never
finished.) It comes down to accuracy, adherence to constraints and
standards, and statistics (layer count, via count, etc.) The test was
fairly easy (for those who know their electronics), the interview was hard
to gage but counted for relatively little.

All this and free food, too :)

It was fun and I would recommend it to anyone who has the time to attend.

Subject: [DC] PCB "Top Gun" Contest

I have heard about this contest but never really paid
attention till last year. I attended the PCB West Mardi
Gras party and had a conversation with a Top Gun
participant. What he said about the contest got me
interested. He told me I should try next year(2006).

Can someone explain in detail how this contest works?
I would like to know more than I get on the webpage.
What type of design? The length of time given etc.?
How do you enter? What is the cost?

All help is appreciated.
