Seems like this is an international problem, most times I have been pleaded
to "ASSIST" with a design because generally (at least in mine) the work is
done for someone I know. As this is after hours work and is considered an
"ASSISTANCE" you are expected to keep your costs extremely low, because
these "engineers" assume its just a case of joining the dots. Forget any
cost adjustments for changes, mods and or "nice to have". Any designer will
tell you the manufacturing datapack is the most time consuming stage, so
imagine the irritation when a change is introduced after the PACK is
generated. All this is done with a RUSH RUSH attitude as the design needs
get into the market NOW. In the beginning both parties understood that the
work will be done after hours, that understanding flies out the window
towards the end.
Heres what I have done with a degree of success.
Once the design is complete I negotiate with the PCB manufacturing house for
the prototypes. I ask the person who contracted me to transfer the payment
of the prototype pcbs into my account. I sign an NDA (non disclosure
agreement) with the manufacturing house. Once the Prototypes have proven
successful no pcbs get manufactured without my knowledge. That way any
further progress can be negotiated.

Mario,
Sorry to hear about your problem.
I've had the same thing happen, and still haven't worked out a method
that
I'm 100% satisfied with.
It's good that you posted your information here, not only for yourself
but
for others as well.
Gook luck with getting paid.
Richard
