Doug,
        I have experience with PCAD and Protel.  I love Protel.  It did 
     everything PCAD does with far less the hassle.  I am currently working 
     with PCAD 8.5 (DOS-based), but I do understand there is a windows 
     version of PCAD out.  I could probably list 10 very good reasons 
     Protel is the better software.  I'm running into all kinds of querks 
     that PCAD has that I find very dangerous, because they could cause 
     errors.
        All the board houses need from you are Gerber files, drill files, 
     and a FAB drawing to specify details.  Sometimes they like to have the 
     netlist also.

We are not a board fab or assy house. I am looking for board 
layout software.  We currently use AutoCad for board layout. 
I want to move away from this since it's not software made 
for layout work.
     
I've been looking at P-Cad, GerbTool and ProTel.
     
1. Is it safe to assume everyone basically talks in
   gerber file language?
     
2. Anyone care to comment on software for layout?
     
I am looking specifically for people with experience 
on the software they talk about.
