Colleen,

A .026 inch via with a .001 inch minimum amount of plating on the hole
wall will carry 3 amps reliably. However, if you can not guarantee .001
inch minimum plating and you fall into a .001 inch average plating rule
then you could have plating as low as .0008 inch. In that case the via
hole size would increase to .031 inch.

Thanks
Tony Cosentino

Subject: [DC] Carrying current through a via

How would one calculate how big a via hole has to be in order to carry
enough current through it to meet the load requirements?

I have a 4 layer, 2 oz, .062 thick, board that needs to carry 3 amps
through a via, (via barrel platting of .001). I can not find any
information that will help calculate how big the hole needs to be to
accommodate this.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Colleen
