1) What is your Job title?
Design Engineer

2) Are you involved in PCB Design or some other activity - (please indicate)
PCB Design, Librarian, Components/Packaging Engineering

3) What type of boards do you create?
In-house test equipment

4) How large is a typical design team at your company?
three

5) What is the duration of your typical design time?
6-8 months

6) What percentage of the time spent is on Schematic Development?
50%

7) What percentage of the time spent is on PCB Design or Layout
25%

8) What percentage of the time spent is on Manufacturing support
5%

9) What percentage of the time spent is on Signal Integrity analysis
15%

10) What percentage of the time spent is on Thermal/EMI
5%

-comment - a large part of that schematic(Verilog) development is spent within fpga's. Low mfg support is because we don't produce for outside sales, production volume is low. We don't have to pass FCC and if it gets too hot, get a bigger fan.

11) How many boards are typically in your projects?
each board is considered a 'project', but the system has ~30 boards; the system is a never-ending, evolving project.

12) How many FPGA's or ASIC's are used in your projects?
2-6 per logic board, >30/system

13) What is the average layer count of your PCB designs
12, range 6-18

14) What is the typical clock speed or frequency your designs operate at?
typ 200mhz, max 800mhz, design for edge rates > ghz.

15) Do you consider your designs to be 'high speed'?
yes, and getting faster

16) Will you be doing much more, more, the same, less, or much less designs
next year?
more

17) What CAD tool(s) do you use?
PCAD, Hyperlynx, CAM350, SPECCTRA

18) Do you plan on spending more, same or less on CAD tools next year?
more

19) Are Signal Integrity tools important to the success of your board
designs?
yes

20) Are you very satisfied, satisfied, or not satisfied with your design
tools?
satisfied, but looking; hi hopes for upcoming PCAD2004

21) What does your CAD tool do Right? Or Wrong? What do you like about it
and not like about it.
We have not found anything we need that PCAD can't do, its ok once you learn the gotcha's, magic keystrokes, and utilities. Would be nice to get something more integrated; again, hi hopes for upcoming PCAD2004
