This is a repost of a similar thread I started on 22 January 2002; similar
song, different day.

As before, I'm in a small company, and I've been tasked with devising an
internal part numbering scheme.

This time, the primary focus will be on stockroom tracking/retrieval/costing
of purchased "BUY" components which appear in Bills-Of-Material for
assemblies we design. The secondary focus will be on stockroom
tracking/retrieval/costing of the "MAKE" assemblies and subassemblies. New
to the mix is the industry consensus towards separate part numbers for
RoHS-compliant devices.

Conceivably, as before, a hypothetical internal part number might consist
of:

1st field "Prefix" (XXX) = significant digits establishing, for example,
stockroom locations, so resistors end up stocked next to resistors and not
next to transformers.

2nd field "Mantissa" (YYY) = non-significant digits within the Prefix class.

3rd field "Suffix" (ZZZ) = non-significant digits describing "dash numbers"
for flavors or configurations of "MAKE" assemblies, or RoHS-compliant
versions of, say, garden variety "BUY" 6.8Kohm 5% 0603 resistors with
tin-lead pads.

Given the validity of the above,

1. Is there a consensus on the length of each field in the XXX-YYYY-ZZZ
format of an internal part numbering scheme?

2. Does the total part number length need to be limited to 10 digits to
comply with UPC bar coding?

3. Is it a sin to separate the part number fields with hyphens or periods
(noting that either separator can be keyed by an operator using the numeric
portion of a normal PC keyboard with NumLock on)?

At any rate, I surmise I must again "roll my own".

So in the interest of time, can anyone share their company's internal part
numbering scheme with me, or direct me to a helpful website that does not
charge for its services, or if I am totally off the wall, help me out?

TIA and Best Regards,
