In a perfect world, there would be no risk involved in doing business...
(and then there's Walgreen's)... :)

But seriously, I have been 'stiffed' by contract job providers before as
well, and I know it will probably not be the last time, but there are a
few
things you can do to reduce the risk involved with doing contract
design...

I'm sure members of this forum who are experienced designers have
'horror
stories' they could tell... in fact I wish they would, it's helpful to
those
of us who have been forced to look for additional work through self
employment or who have chosen that path for the obvious rewards it
brings...
not being aware of the pitfalls.

I extend credit to the customer IF I know who they are, and I only do it
for
one board at a time... I expect payment within 15 days of delivery of
the
files... and limit my liability to corrections to the design file...
it's
their risk to purchase boards and incur the costs involved in
prototyping...

I only provide the conversion of their schematics into PCB databases.
Deliverables are Gerber files, and associated drawings and files needed
to
build the boards on their 'nickel'...

Small claims court is probably the only recourse you have to get them to
pay.... It might be wise to check with legal council regarding that
procedure...

If there is any doubt as to their financial standing... just 'no bid'
the
job. It's far less expensive and less time consuming.

And certainly we don't want to let them string us along and just to find
that they have packed up and left for another state or country... 50%
of
the invoice amount 'up front' also, as a good faith investment on their
part, sometimes makes the risk somewhat less, and 'chases away' or
discourages 'would-be opportunists' who have only a wish to exploit your
good faith and scam you for your expertise... very low scumbags indeed.

I know it's advice that helps not one bit with the current issue, but
perhaps it can help others to avoid the same fate.

Best regards,

Thanks for the warning.

In my opinion, one of the advantages to belonging to this forum is that
we
can look out for each other,
(so don't worry if you get flamed because at least one person
appreciates
the info).

I did five designs for a company that I believed in... never got a cent

best wishes and hope you get paid,

Jack

Hello everyone,

I really hate using this forum for this purpose but I just don't want to
see any other designer getting screwed the way I did.
I provided PCB design services for a company in Jan 2003. They did not
pay me for the work then and have still not paid me, with interest
accruing monthly. I've heard promise after promise but still no money.
Now they need some revisions to the board and have asked me to provide
additional services for a "promise to pay" some time in the near future.
I have taken the stand "pay me for what I've already done and I'll do
the new work with a promise to pay".

I believe they are now shopping for someone else to do the work. I have
the original database (and won't give it up) so the job will need to be
recreated from scratch.

Here is the information I can provide:
The company is/was Products Research, Inc. formerly based in Addison, IL
but was forced out of their office due to lack of finances.
The board is a 6-layer (4 sig, 2 plane) mixed tech (SMT&TH) with SM on
both sides, called the Advantage 2.
Contacts: Jack Paul and/or Dick Kaman

If any of you have been contacted for this job BEWARE. If you would like
to speak to me about this please call the number below.

Also, please don't respond to this email. I'm sending out for
informational purposes only.

Best regards,

Mario Irigoyen
