Folks, there are different values in electronic vs paper copies of the
standards.

Electronic copies, even the locked single-user versions, can be
electronically searched for word phrases and you can always do a screen
print to capture an important table or clause. Single user CDs cost $5
more than hard copy documents. Not well publicized are options to
purchase both hard copy and CD at the same time and receive a pretty
good discount so you have the best of both worlds.

New users of IPC standards can easily build their library by purchasing
"manuals" of documents instead of individual purchases. For example,
the 2220 Design Standards Series includes the base document plus all
five sectional standards:
2221A - Generic Standard on Printed Board Design
2222 - Sectional Standard on Rigid Organic Printed Boards
2223A - Sectional Design Standard for Flexible Printed Boards
2224 - Sectional Standard of Design of PWB for PC Cards
2225 - Sectional Design Standard for Organic Multichip Modules (MCM-L)
and MCM-L Assemblies
2226 - Sectional Design Standard for High Density Interconnect (HDI)
Boards

Member cost is $80--saving $20 off individual copy prices, and a kit
2220-K of all six hard copies PLUS all six in single-user electronic
format is $115 for members.

There are other manual sets and purchase options but of course value has
to be determined by the users. Ask customer service or your staff
liaison for more info.

Regarding webinars, we've tried real-time slide pushes in the past and
they work pretty well when all participants have high-speed connections
but complex slides with intense graphic/table content can be
excruciatingly slow to download when users have a slow dialup
connection. We're always looking for better options and appreciate your
feedback.

Oh... and as a note of caution...
I was disappointed when I first bought my specs from the IPC because I
bought the CD versions... They are protected CD's that don't allow you
to print out the document... I found this useless...
I turned my copies back in and exchanged them for the Printed versions
because of this annoying feature.
You may want to carefully consider if the CD's are valuable to you...
they charge more for them too, which didn't make any sense to me
either...
I am very happy with the paper versions... although I would have wished
that the CD versions were printable. Then I would not have had an issue
with them.

Hi Bryan,

The Designer's Council negotiated some discounts on certain specs deemed
important to designers... With your membership you can get a 50% off
discount on these specs. Plus your $50.00 coupon you get when you renew
your membership is valid for use to get more off on the specs you
purchase.

Here's a link to the discount page... you will want to check it out.

Maybe some of the other designers can tell you what specs they use on a
regular basis... I use the IPC-2221,IPC-2222,IPC-D-325, IPC-2615,
IPC-6012, J-STD-001, IPC-SM-782, IPC-D-316, IPC-4101, IPC/JPCA-2315,
IPC-2223.

The IPC-SM-782 is old... there is a new spec out for land patterns but I
have not purchased it yet. It's IPC-7351 ... I plan to get it sometime
this year.

Subject: [DC] IPC Design Specifications

Hello!

I recently joined the Designer's Council, and I wanted to get some input
from those of you out there that have been working with IPC
specifications.
I have been designing boards with through-hole, SMT and mixed
technologies for some time, but have never had the IPC specs for
designing them. In an effort to "get with the program", I wanted to
purchase the specs that would be most beneficial. Can anyone tell me
what specifications best cover the design of T/H and SMT technology
boards?

I also am working on some designs where AC power is present on the
boards, and I am concerned about trace separation for a given voltage. I
know that there are specifications out there that address this, but I am
not sure if they are UL or IPC based. Can anyone point me in the
direction of these specs?

Thanks in advance for your help!
