Matt,
I would tend to agree with George Harris, too many little unconnected
pieces of information could lead you down the wrong path.
I realize this may be a design you were thrown into so biting the
perverbial bullet may apply to get the job done, but a second note, this
forum may not be the best suited for the level of support you may need to
really do this design justice.
Do you have the time to step back a little and smell the coffee.
You may want to get a hold of a few resouses and hunker down a little.
IPC has much information in the way of standrads. http://www.ipc.org
Try the SMTA http://www.smta.org/
In the SMTA there is a book store you may want to check out
Printed Circuits Handbook 4th Ed by Clyde F. Coombs
High-Speed Digital Design A Handbook of Black Magic by Howard Johnson &
Martin Graham
High Speed Digital Design, A Handbook of Interconnect THeory and Design
Practices
by Stephen Hall, Garret Hall & James McCall (amazon)
There are a many other books up there, that could also help out.
If you get through this first design you should really check
all the mentioned sited form this forum and really start to get into
some of these books.
The IPC also has the Designers Council that may be able to help
you get a start with that education about multilayer design, which
can also be reached at the IPC website.

Hi Matthew,

You don't say whether your design belongs to the "high speed" or "low speed"
category.
One of the application notes on the Merix website deals with this issue.
If high speed, then "signal integrity" rules apply. Some of the
well-meaning suggestions you received could lead you straight to a signal
integrity disaster, resulting in a board with excessive crosstalk, large
overshoots, noisy power rails, high EMI and other problems too numerous to
mention.

Matthias' message summarized very neatly many of the general rules which
will take you toward a reliable design. Another good reference is
http://www.ednmag.com/reg/2000/03162000/06ms603.htm, a nice summary of
signal integrity rules. (You will be asked to register to view this
article).

Hi there again Senthil,
Looks like more are asking for this wallchart - even without seeing it....

I found even more at your website of www.merix.com in the resources section.
I can be sure that I will be downloading quite a bit in the morning.

Again many thanks - Matthew.
