I still "think" in Imperial units for the most part, with a few exceptions;
but most of my (our) recent designs have been in metric. It is really
contract-driven, but our software is very flexible in this respect;
changing between Imperial and metric is a simple matter and does not affect
the actual size of the objects. The one place where I have to translate
from Imperial to metric on a regular basis is drill sizes, unless I have a
chart handy. This is only an issue when I am adding a new hole that has not
been defined precisely.

When it is necessary to make numeric calculations for the translations, I
don't bother with manual calculations with formulae - too much possibility
of error. I use a program on my PDA wherein I simply enter the value in
mils, inches, etc. and get the corresponding number in millimeters; or I
can do the opposite to get the Imperial value from metric data. Similar
programs are available for the PC.

Since we've moved from Imperial-only to mostly metric, I've had to rewrite
some of my automation userware to detect the base unit; many of my output
scripts for fabrication data, postscript documents, and parts placement
machines needed to adapt.
