Hi Ted and All -

Yes, you were a bit too general. IPC-2221 is a DESIGN STANDARD, whereas
IPC-4101 is the appropriate MATERIAL SPECIFICATION. The subsections of
IPC-4101 allow the designer to select, by slash number (ie., IPC-4101/**)
the specific material group desired. When the end item design criteria
permits I have given the board fabricator and either/or call out.

If you intend to allow the board fabricator some options, it is important
that these callouts also be coordinated with the assembler, so as not to
adversely affect his process set-up. One of the nightmares of
Manufacturing is to learn, after the fact, that the board they have been
assembling with ease for a long period of time, is suddenly made from a
different material which requires a different preheat setup, or is
intolerant of some of the chemistry of their processes.

Regards - Kelly
