At Evans and Sutherland (Simulation Division), Salt Lake City,UT
we use Cadnece (Allegro) and Viewlogic tools. We also generate a
BOM from the schematic and place it in a transfer area. This file
is transfered electronicaly to our MRP system. The file contains only
quantities, part number, and reference designations. The remaining
items are generated or extracted as part of the installation into the
MRP system. You then check this data and finish your assembly drawing.
The MPR system turns out to be the Master for the Parts List.
We maintain the Parts List by using electronic files extracted from
the changed schematic. This guarantee's the Parts List and schematic
data in both match.

At Lockheed Martin Aeronutronic, Rancho Santa Margarita,CA
we use Cadnece tools and we also generate a BOM from the 
schematic and place it on our assy dwg as well as a REF DES
table which relates each BOM item no. to each REF DES.
