Our assembly group used to pitch a fit if the traces didn't come out of the
ends of the pads,
---[] []--- , not the sides, not the corners. They said it caused
tombstoning. When confronted to produce a board with this tombstoning, they
couldn't. They subsequently changed the rule so we could use sides and
corners to exit, and there have been no additional complaints.

Any assembler, captive or independent, will not change unless you force them
to. They would rather use proven methods and not expend time, materials,
resources, and MONEY to improve their process.

Did you ask them WHY? It's fine for a vendor to take a position such as this
- but they really need to justify it when they do. We do it all the time
without any problem.

We had a board reviewed by an assembly company that
said traces should not come out the corner of chip
resistors and capacitors (45 degrees). I thought that
this was I good way to keep trace lengths shorter.
What problems does this cause coming out of the
corner? Is a side or end the preferred way?

Thanks,
