The "rule of thumb" goes back to the days when soldermask annular ring was
10mils. On reflowed boards, when the components weren't glued in place,
components tended to float with the solder as it flowed. So a 1206 with top
pad tied to the left side and bottom side tied to the right side could
rotate counter-clockwise a fair amount (traces were typically wider back in
the day also).

A whole lot of general guidelines lag behind the times, which is natural, I
think....

=========

We had a board reviewed by an assembly company that
said traces should not come out the corner of chip
resistors and capacitors (45 degrees). I thought that
this was I good way to keep trace lengths shorter.
What problems does this cause coming out of the
corner? Is a side or end the preferred way?

Thanks,
