DS is the correct Ref Des for a lighting device, indicating device, or optical indicator or signaling device...
When they developed the spec we used it for a 'light bulb' or 'Lamp' indicator on a front panel for example.
LED is not specifically called out in the spec but it functions as a lighted indicator.

That being said, a light emitting diode is also a semiconductor or 'diode', which was a 'CR' or 'D' according to ANSI Y32.2.
I would think both are 'correct'. (D also described a vacuum tube Diode)

'D' for Diode takes up the least amount of space on your board... just saying. :)

The IPC standard takes the IEEE 315-1975 as the baseline. That's the earliest source I know of which clearly calls for DS.

In the past I have used D, LD, LED.
