DS is correct.
The point of a standard is to have a common language that all use and communicate with.
The more that use the standard, the easier it is to do business.
Someday, there may be a worldwide adopted standard... but for now, this is the best standard we have.
Rogues who don't like standards, will always be doing their own thing and answering questions about what language they are using, what units they are using, how they interpret their drawings, etc...
I, for one, like standardization and its benefits to the whole industry.

According to the ANSI list of ref des's, a "light-emiting solid-state device" should be a DS. A ref des is not supposed to be an abbreviation of the component type, but a distinct, short, representation of that component type.
I know that all of us use what we've learned through OJT or what the company standard is. When there is no company standard or that standard conflicts with good communication, I go to the ANSI standard. It is a more accepted & known world wide.
